The Warrior and the Bear

About this artwork

On the plains of the American Wild West, a Native American warrior and his trusty Indian Pony are tracking something. Both of our heroes are wearing war paint and seem ready for a struggle. The man is armed with a tomahawk and he holds it at the ready in his right hand. Meanwhile, the horse is alert, scanning the grasses of the surrounding prairie. It's a misty morning and difficult to see far before the fog obscures everything. The hunter stoops to examine the ground. Suddenly, a sound from his horse alerts him to another presence. Looking up, materializing from the fog is a monstrous grizzly bear gazing malevolently at him with its teeth bared.

I'm happy the way the environment worked out in this scene. It's a bit different from my usual color palette, more muted, but I like the way it still has a sense of tension. This work is among several I've done recently featuring a bear. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that we've had a lot of bears in the neighborhood lately going through the trash cans. Though, here in North Georgia, we have rather small black bears, not huge, frightening grizzly bears.
